CSIC

CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) is the largest public research institution in Spain, with 123 institutes that cover basic and applied research in three global areas: Life, Society and Materia, and Interdisciplinary Thematic Platforms oriented to the coordinated resolution of great global challenges. 3 CSIC institutes participate in CHARISMA.

Role in the project

CSIC is CHARISMA’s project coordinator and participates in all WPs, mainly:

  • Spectroscopy & Industrial Catalysis group (Institute for Catalysis and Petroleum Chemistry, ICP)

    • Scientific Management (WP1)

    • Experimental validation of calculated spectroscopic and structural features (WP2)

    • Design and validation of Raman data acquisition, calibration and processing protocols (WP3-5).

    • Collaboration with TOPSOE to apply in-line Raman for quality control in the synthesis of industrial catalysts (WP6).

  • Ceramics for Smart Systems group (Institute of Ceramics and Glass, ICV).

    • Design of standards for Raman units calibration and benchmarking (WP3).

    • Raman characterization by portable and high-resolution Raman spectrometers (WP4-WP5).

    • Development and validation of Raman characterisation for new NMs applications in security markers and food safety in collaboration with FNMT and ENCAPSULAE (WP6).

  • Macromolecular Engineering group (Institute of Polymer Science and Technology, ICTP).

    • Development of active food packaging and in situ Raman characterization of it properties, performance and disposal (WP6).ICVICTP

Miguel A. Bañares, PhD Chemistry, Research Full Professor. Expert in operando Raman spectroscopy (the term operando was coined by this group back in 2000) for characterization of functional materials when environmental conditions change (hydration, reduction, oxidation, catalytic reaction) to assess structure-performance relationships at a molecular scale.

Raquel Portela, PhD Chemical Engineer, Tenured Scientist. Her research lines revolve around the use operando spectroscopy for understanding and optimizing catalysis and the development of cellular ceramics for process intensification. Experienced in adsorption and (photo)catalysis for air pollution control and gas-phase industrial reactions.
