Workshop Report: NMBP-35 Workshop on Characterisation & Digitisation

On 17 January 2024, the NMBP-35 H2020 Projects CHARISMA, NanoMECommons, and EASI-STRESS hosted their second joint exploitation event in Madrid at the CSIC facilities. The workshop, titled "From Research to Industry: How Characterisation and Digitisation Change the Game," aimed to explore the impact of characterisation and digitisation on various industries.

The agenda featured three sessions, including industry talks, discussions on the vision of European Materials Modelling and Characterisation Councils, and insights into current opportunities for industry from research facilities and projects.

The sessions under spotlight

The opening session, led by project coordinators Miguel A. Bañares (CHARISMA), Costas Charitidis (NanoMECommons), Nikolaj Zangenberg (EASI-STRESS), as well as Yanaris Ortega Garcia (European Commission/EC), set the tone for the day.

The first session included speakers representatives from key industrial players as Bosch, IRIS, and BASF, addressing topics like digital twin in metal material manufacturing, in-line process analytical technologies like Raman spectroscopy, and the digital transformation of analytical labs in the chemical industry.

The second session delved into the vision of the European Materials Modelling and Characterisation Councils, featuring contributions from Alex Simperler (EMMC) and Marco Sebastiani (EMCC). An open panel discussion provided a platform for industry representatives and project coordinators, fostering collaboration and addressing challenges.

The third session showcased current opportunities for industry from research facilities and projects, with presentations from the three organising projects (CHARISMA, EASI-STRESS, and NanoMECommons), the company i-TRIBOMAT, founded as a result of an Innovation Action, and relevant projects in the field: AID4GREENEST, NanoBat, DigiCell, CHALLENGES, iENTRANCE@ENL, ACCORDS, GC-MAC, SITOLUB. A notable feature was the Insight Talk by Ennio Capria on the use of analytical research infrastructures to support industrial innovation.

The event concluded with an interactive session.
